Jubilee year
2005 would have been the 200th birthday of Denmark’s
most famous son: the author H. C. Andersen. This jubilee will
be celebrated with an Andersen-themed year of culture - all
over Denmark, as well as abroad. The goal is to further knowledge
of the many facets of Andersen’s work, amongst both
adults and children.
Contemporary artists
The H.C. Andersen 2005 fund aims to further knowledge about
Andersen’s life and works. In addition, the Fund enables
contemporary artists to create works of quality that directly
or indirectly take their inspiration from Andersen’s
authorship. The official celebrations in Denmark begin on
the jubilee of the author’s birthday – the 2nd
of April 2005 – and go on till the 6th of December,
which was the day his home town of Odense recognised his genius
by making him an honorary citizen.
Many genres
The period up until and including the summer of 2005 will
see a number of Andersen-related projects in progress. The
H.C. Andersen 2005 Fund works to promote projects that span
many different genres, such as film, television, theatre,
opera, dance, multimedia, exhibitions, different kinds of
music, education and tourism. The intention is to give a many-sided
picture of Andersen, with contemporary interpretations side
by side with those reflecting the world he himself moved in.
Broad popular appeal
H.C. Andersen 2005 will be a widely ranging spectacle, comprising
both large scale productions – initiatives with international
impact – and a host of smaller events. Whilst some arrangements
will have broad popular appeal, others again will be more
specialised and thus cater for specific target groups.
